And much of that same funky feel translated from the stage into the studio. Plus, as time and schedules permitted, the assembled musicians were also lending their talents to Garcia's third solo album Reflections (1976). As is evidenced by the music heard here from a pair of consecutive shows - November 17 at the Keystone Berkeley - Hopkins supplied a remarkable soulfulness to the band's stage presence.

While his tenure with Garcia and company lasted less than six months, he had already become somewhat of a fixture on the scene, having done extensive stints with the Jefferson Airplane/ Jefferson Starship and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Hopkins' work as a British studio musician in the '60s gained him clout with many in the Bay Area psychedelic rock community. The seminal incarnation captured on this double-disc anthology include Garcia supported by John Kahn.

As with the Grateful Dead, numerous archival live sets from the Jerry Garcia Band have been released in the decades since Garcia's passing.During the Grateful Dead's mid-'70s hiatus, Jerry Garcia kept busy with a myriad of projects - including plenty of road work with the recently-formed Jerry Garcia Band. A version of the band, rechristened JGB, continued touring after Garcia's death in 1995 and was briefly led by Kahn (who died in 1996), then helmed by Seals. The band's lineup shifted quite a bit over the years, though bassist John Kahn and keyboard player Melvin Seals were the most regular sidemen in the band. Regular live performances followed during the '80s and '90s, plus the live album Jerry Garcia Band, recorded in 1990. His most widely known project was the Jerry Garcia Band, which formed in 1975 and produced one studio album, 1978's Cats Under the Stars. A masterly guitarist and songwriter, and a highly underrated vocalist, Garcia was a true music lover, involving himself in numerous non-Dead projects over the years. For many, he was the embodiment of the freewheeling artistic spirit of the 1960s. Though he was chiefly known as the leader of the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia was much more than that.
